Day #2 in Kona

Ok, my intention is not to evoke jealousy… but I am sitting with my laptop, poolside, by some palm trees overlooking the ocean. If I had a fruity beverage with a lot of rum in it, this moment might be perfect. (Alas, my own race is in the near future – no party time yet for Carole…) For now, the bottled water will have to suffice.

This morning felt like a reunion. My teammate, Alex Mroszczyk-McDonald (2007 IMLP winner!), picked me up at 7:30am so we could do a swim together at the outdoor Kona pool. It was awesome to have some time with him to talk racing, Timex, etc. When we got to the pool, we jumped into an empty lane next to Hillary Biscay and Belinda Granger… it was fun to gab with them for a bit. Shortly thereafter, Nicole and Tim DeBoom jumped into the lane next to us. After they got out, Dede Griesbauer got in. I hadn’t seen Dede since 2006 so it was great to see her and interrupt her workout :) to chat – she and I have some mutual friends in the swimming world so I enjoyed exchanging updates. She was sooooooooooo jealous that I was here and wasn’t racing, but I quickly reminded her that in two weeks she’d be sending ME the emails, “I am sooo glad my season is over!” while I still had to race. She laughed and agreed. Such a cool chick she is.

After the swim I had a few calls to return to various sponsors, and then prepared my bike for an easy spin. I didn’t have a ride on the schedule today but I decided to go to the end of Ali’i Drive and back. It is fun to “people watch” on this main drag and this was a better option than napping. I am not in Kona to rest, I am here to train and enjoy being here. I’ll sleep tonight. :)

I can tell it is getting closer to race week. Ali’i Drive is becoming more congested with cars, runners, cyclists and extremely fit people roaming around. There is a huge difference even in 2 days. It’s hard to not enjoy the aesthetics of the body of an athlete. All the men and women are beautiful – defined muscles, toned bodies, low body fat. I think the body of a triathlete must be the most perfect among athlete bodies. The swimmer body will probably always be my favorite, but even I agree that the upper body on the women can get too massive. But the triathlete body with the combination of swim, bike, run muscles recruited – I think they have the ‘perfect’ shape. I’m a little biased here but feel I can also be slightly objective since I am not one who has this perfect form. I am the least looking triathlete I know with way too much swimmer (and fat girl) remnants to ever have the sleek, lite appearance.. But for those who do… mmmmm… I think they are stunning!

I am craving a cheeseburger. :)
Mahalo!
