Carole - was on Dorie's site and wondered over - this was a great read - heard about your accident in the fall...and now, have it confirmed by reading this - that you will bounce back and prevail on the course again - as Lombardi once said - it is the pursuit of excellence that breeds perfection...and clearly - you pursue excellence - I have recently endured an injury that left me with nerve damage in my leg - and as you know atrophy is quick, and immobility for an active person is like poison...on a tough day...reading through your site was very inspirational and motivating...I wish you as speedy a return to your former greatness as is possible...patient persistence will take you there - seems there are many in your corner - and now there is one more - be well.

Hi Carole...I have been following your news and was so sorry to hear about your accident. You probably don't remember me from the sea of faces you've coached and encouraged but you helped my husband Bruce and me with swimming and cheered me through a couple of Acworth sprint tri's. Knowing your amazing spirit it is hard to believe anything will keep you down for long. I was just reading about your trip to PCB and how discouraging the pain was for you. About two years ago I broke my back in a horseback riding accident. The pain, the brace, the lying around staring at the ceiling...it all rings a bell...I've been there. I hope it will encourage you to know that it does get better and it gets better suddenly and unexpectedly. Just when I was thinking there would never be a day without pain and where I didn't have to take breaks to lie down, I started to notice that the pain had substantially subsided. It just happened...one day it seemed the pain was still there and the next the difference was amazing. It will happen for you...it takes time and it takes rest but it is coming and you will be back up and running...I just know it. I have run some of my best times (nothing in your league!) since my back healed and I know you will be stronger than ever when you heal...just hang in there. Daily pain and huge limitations in your activity can wear on your spirit and pull you down but you are too strong to be down for long. We are thinking of you and cheering you on and look forward to hearing about future victories when this time is only a long past memory for you. Keep your chin up!

Hey Carole, It's me, purple bike guy. I hope it was ok to post that race report on slowtwitch - I reread it last night and it sounds kind of like something you would hear on one of those Ironman specials from Kona - kind of sappy, like a "made for TV" movie, not usually how I write. I think you did an awsome job and it was a heart breaking finish. I really thought you were going to pull it off - I mean, you really picked it up again towards the end. I'm sorry about the 'all downhill' comment - I felt I needed to say something and we sort of were going down hill at that point (at least I had my hand on the break) - it certainly wasn't uphill :-). In my defence, you threw that cup at my bike, my left arm was numb (still is for some reason) and my butt was killing me from sitting on the bike for four hours - I wasn't thinking straight anymore - I just wanted to get you to the finish safely and get a beer or something. In the end, I'm sorry I left you for another woman - it was out of my hands though, and it was not the way I wanted to finish the day. I read your journal and it looks like you have some tough decisions to make. I wish I could offer some advice, but my latest "achievement" was a 2:59:43 Olympic distance race (and I had to kill myself at the end of the run to beat 3 hours :-) ) - hardly comparable to your latest achievement. But, I love the sport and I will continue to compete and challenge myself as long as I'm physically able. Anyway, Here's my deal - I'll work next years race, but this time on the lead bike, and if you can get in off the bike first - you can slug me there (but not so hard so I can at least still ride) and I promise not to make any stupid comments - deal? The only caveat would be if I compete in next years race (I feeling a bit inspired right now thanks to you) in which case you could probably come out (after winning the race, getting a massage, nice dinner, glass of wine, etc.) and watch me fall flat on my face in the final hours... I hope you have a great birthday, and good luck with your upcoming races. Thanks! Andrew

I checked out your resume and was happy to see you are a 5430 fan as well. Love that race! Anyways, thanks again for the appreciation and if you have a spare minute......you are in recovery mode at least for a day or two, right?....check out www.gorillamultisport.com, it ain't much, but it's my baby. :-) Gail ....it's a little like wrestling a gorilla......

Carole, We had such an exciting time following you Florida 2006 ironman last week. We had phone calls with Andy and Michelle all day, and at the finish we were cheering in a three way with Christel, Andy, Michelle, and Judy and me. You really brought the family together. I have been bragging about you at work. A lot of people know about Ironman, and their response to your accomplishments is awesome. Shortly after the finish, I couldn't wait to call your father. He is very proud of you. Judy started to cry when you came acrost the finish line. You make us all proud. When is the next event? Love, Unk Jim

CAROLE SHARPLESS!!!! I don't know how I found you or found your website but I am so glad I did!! Look what you are doing with your life! I am not surprised. I was showing my husband your website and told him my favorite swimming story of you. Some - what? - 25 years ago? God we're old. The pool was cleaned or something and they had to refill the water. When we all got to practice it was FREEZING. I swear that water was 50 degrees. We were a month out from Regions so John MADE us swim! None of us could take it! It was so cold. After 15 minutes it was too much. Our frozen bodies locked up and our muscles had no blood flow so we all got out and sat on the pool deck. Everyone except Carole. You just kept swimming and swimming - we all just sat on that deck and watched in awe. I'll never forget that. I'm so proud to see what your doing now. Seems your still as tough as ever. Please email me! Love,Hea

I finally got to see you in action this weekend at the Tugaloo Triathlon. As expected, you were extremely awesome! What was the most impressive thing I saw? Was it the look of steely determination on your face as you emerged from the water after the swim? The way you rocketed up that hill after the bike-run transition? Your second place finish in spite of your recent biking accident? The obvious respect and admiration of your fellow athletes? These were all great, but I think the most impressive thing I observed was the fact that, an hour after you finished as we were walking away from the finish line, you shouted encouragement to EVERY runner we passed who was still racing. You are truly a class-act! Good luck at Ironman Florida! Note to all Carole Sharpless sponsors or potential sponsors who might be reading this - I will buy anything that Sharpie endorses and lot of it!

However, as I am on sabbatical, I can make some time to do a taper ride this week in Boulder with an uber Atlanta athlete. Wanna go for a spin girl? MACON: - You saw, you went and you conquered...4:42....WOW! You were awesome. I could see it in you the night before, and your intensity when you started the swim. Keep it going for IMC. You will do great things, again. On a day long ago, after 49 straight swim event wins, and in response to a reporter's query of "when was the last time you finished 2nd"........your response was, "There is no 2nd, you either win, or you lose." .........and that from a 12-year old. You've come a long way baby. Great to see you again......Much love, Dad

I speak for the masses... Rarely in our short lives are we blessed with the opportunity to meet amazing people. I can count on one hand those in my life--one being my wife, Suzanne. These special people do things to us intrinsically that no other force in this world can...they turn frowns upside down, turn gray skies blue, brown grass green...they light our candles and light fires under our asses. They inspire us in ways that defy crafty rhetoric. These people do so in an instant--eye contact, a hand shake (or hug - that is Sharpie's style), a 2003 IM Lake Placid performance. I am so proud to add another amazing person to my short list. And I am blessed to get a front row seat to the amazing things that are happening before our very eyes. For three days I reveled in that front row seat as I joined my All3Sports Elite Teammate for a 3 days of training. I was completely submerged and overcome by the entity, "Carole Sharpless"...and God did some of his best work with this one! If you have never had the priviledge...book a flight right now...spend five minutes in her presence...it is all she needs to change your life forever. And to think I got 72 hours of it--and more--anytime I want!!! For those of you that know what I'm talking about...you KNOW what I'm talking about. These comments aren't for you, Sharpie, they are for your fans--and I am your biggest one! Here are my comments for you-- We cheer for you as much as you inspire us...and yes, I speak for the masses. Here are some more (you have to sing them like a song, and I know you've got rhythm)... "Go get 'em, Sharpie, and bring the pain... Watch out, b!*#&es, here comes the C-Train" Choo-Choo... Love, "Sally"

Carol, I heard you speak at a function months back and was, frankly, very impressed. I went into it thinking it would be another boring lecture from another stuck-on-themselves triathlete with no brain. I could not have been more mistaken. Your humility and self depricating humor was refreshing and your ability to relate to even the most beginner of athletes is a rare find. You were smart yet had a great sense of humor. Not bad to look at either. I now understand why I have heard such rave reviews about you and stand corrected with my prior opinion. Best of luck to you. Chris H.

I just wanted to say "Hey Carole!" and give you a great big (although very belated) CONGRATULATIONS on your awesome finish at IM FL!!!! You are the woman! I am very proud of you for bouncing back from your experience at IM WI. Speaking of that day, thank you so much for the support you gave me. Although I probably didn't show it, I very much appreciated everything you said to me, and you really did put things into perspective for me. (Just to let you know, I had a sweat/fluid analysis done by a doc from the Medical College of GA on Sunday, and I now I know what I must do to replenish myself correctly). I will tell you about it the next time I see you. Until then, take care and happy resting! Love, Paige :)

I just wanted to thank Sharpie for sharing such a fun weekend with her fans!! I had the pleasure of joining Sharpie in Panama City, FL, last weekend, as she demonstrated not only her athletic talent but also her inspirational will and determination. Watching Sharpie at Ironman Florida was awe-inspiring and quite motivating. Perhaps too motivating I fear, because I am now signed up for IM Florida 2006. :) To me, Sharpie is what triathlon is all about...competition, balance, fitness, and fun. While Sharpie is competitive (as we all know), she is also the first person to thank those her around her, including the volunteers at her races, with a smile on her face. I'm so glad to call Sharpie a friend!! Thanks, Sharpie, for setting such a wonderful example of the spirit of triathlon. Great race!!

What can I say? Carole is my inspiration. She motivates me more than anyone on the planet. I can't imagine being coached by anyone else. Carole is the most special person. Her attitude is always positive and she gives 110% to her athletes, as well as her training. She's always there to give feedback, postive energy and the occasional kick in the butt! I can honestly say that Carole is one of the most caring, giving and special individuals that I've ever met. She inspires me to try harder than I thought I could and knowing that she gives so much makes it easier for me to keep going. I love you Carole!!!

This is one of the better sites I've seen in a while, good job! (Well, excluding all of the "adult" sites, of course...oops, did I say that out loud?) There weren't, however, any pix of the 15K foot, snow capped, peaks of south central Wisconsin. I know some guys from UW who sherpa’d part-time. Need for me to give ‘em a call and have them forward you some pix? I so expected “Baby’s Got Back” as the intro audio…

The Playah, The Jamoca-Locomotion, The Diva of Toto Creek, The one & only Madamme Sharpalot, it is with great honor that I sign your guest book! I don't have a sound card in my computer, but I'm guessing the music on your website is a rambling smorgasbord of snappy showtunes. All kidding aside, well, not ALL kidding, because, well that just makes things far too bland, but on a little more serious note...I once heard that "hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things". Well, you are "hope"...hope that the hard work will one day payoff, hope that good & right are alive and well in this world, hope that dreams happen, hope that food will always take precedence! Good times, good times, Chuck
